A girl has been hacked to death allegedly by her husband over dowry in Moulvibazar's Juri upazila.
Sumi Begum's death was from excessive bleeding and blunt force trauma to the head, neck and right hand, Juri Police Station Officer-in-Charge Jamal Uddin quoted an autopsy report of Moulvibazar Sadar Hospital as saying.
Accused Abdul Nur, 30, and his family, including his father Juad Ali, were found to be on the run when police raided their residence in Puticherra village, he told The Daily Star.
The 20-year-old victim's brother, Abdus Samad, filed a case against Nur.
He said Sumi, daughter of Md Alauddin of Husnabad village, was attacked on Saturday night by Nur on refusing his demand for Tk 50,000 as dowry.
Informed by locals, they admitted her to the nearby Juri Modern Hospital and then shifted her to Kulaura Upazila Health Complex where doctors declared her dead on Sunday night, added Samad.
Police sent the body for autopsy on Monday afternoon.
He said Nur started demanding dowry around a year after their marriage in February 2015 and used to often beat her.
Sagornal Union Parishad Chairman Emdadul Islam Chowdhury said he had settled disputes of the couple over dowry several times.
