A doctor was sued yesterday over the death of a baby during a Caesarean operation at a private hospital in Chandpur's Faridganj.
The accused doctor, Mahmuda Begum, has gone into hiding since, said Mahbub Mollah, officer-in-charge of Faridganj Police Station.
With labour pain, Khadiza Begum, wife of expatriate Nasir Hossain of Paschim Dayachara village in the upazila, was admitted to Central Hospital in Faridganj Bazar area around 8:00pm on Wednesday.
As advised by doctors, she was then taken to the Caesarean section of the hospital and Mahmuda, a gynaecologist from Faridganj Health Complex, and another doctor from the health complex started her surgery there around 11:00pm.
During the operation, the baby died inside the womb after it sustained injuries from a scalpel of the doctors, said police and hospital authorities.
The next morning, the relatives of Khadiza tried to vandalise the hospital in protest of the incident. However, police rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control.
Later around noon, Khadiza's mother Sajida Begum filed the case against Mahmud with Faridganj police.
It was not clear why the other doctor was not charged in the case.
OC Mahbub said the hospital authorities termed the death of the baby during the surgery an accident.
Despite repeated attempts, this correspondent could not reach any of the doctors for comments as their mobile phones were switched off.
