17 lives lost in road accidents

Seventeen people were killed and 45 others injured in separate road accidents in the country yesterday.

Our Mymensingh correspondent reports, five people were killed and 32 injured in separate road crashes in Phulpur and Bhaluka upazila of Mymensingh yesterday.

In Bhaluka, two persons were killed and 30 others injured when a bus carrying all garment workers turned turtle on Dhaka-Mymensingh highway at Hazirbazar around 8:30am.

The dead are Ripon Mia, 40, of Munshiganj district, and Kamrul Islam, 30, of Mymensingh.

The injured were admitted to Bhaluka Upazila Health Complex, but five of them were shifted to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital (MMCH), said Sergeant Johirul Islam, in-charge of Bharaduba Highway Police Outpost.

Protesting the accident, hundreds of garment workers blocked Dhaka-Mymensingh highway at Masterbari for an hour.

Meanwhile in Bhaitkandi Banshati area, three poultry businessmen, Shahidul Islam, 50, Edu Mia, 42, and Ridoy Mia, 20, all from Sherpur, were killed while two other persons were injured when their pick-up van collided head-on with a truck around 1:00am.

The injured were admitted to MMCH.

Police seized the vehicles involved in both the accidents, but the drivers fled the scene. Separate cases were lodged.

Our Patuakahali correspondent reports, Kamal Hossain, 30, of Patuakhali sadar upazila, and his three-year-old daughter Keya Moni, died as a covered-van of Pran Group hit the battery-run three-wheeler carrying the two on Patuakhali-Galachipa road.

Meanwhile on Patuakhali-Baufal road,  Salim Howlader, 45, of Surjomoni village in Bafal upazila, died as a shallow engine-run three-wheeler hit him in front of Surjomoni union parishad office.

The body was sent to Patuakhali General Hospital morgue for autopsy.

Our Faridpur correspondent adds, three fish traders were killed and six others injured when the truck they were travelling by overturned on Gopalganj-Takerhat road in Gohal union of Muksudpur upazila

The dead were Dulal Bappary, 50, and Giash Uddin, 28, both of Kondoppur village, and Bilal Maghi, 45, of Bhola Sadar upazila.

The injured were rushed to Rajor Upazila Health Complex.

Our Chittagong staff correspondent adds, an unidentified woman and a two-year-old boy, Mozammel, were killed while three other people injured as a Chittagong city-bound truck collided head-on with the CNG-run auto-rickshaw they were in on Chittagong-Rangamati road at Hathazari upazila.

The injured passengers Askar, Rashed and Belal were admitted to Chittagong Medical College Hospital.

Our Sylhet correspondent adds, two persons were killed and four others injured when a CNG-run auto-rickshaw collided head-on with a truck on Sylhet-Tamabil highway at Shahporan in Sylhet.

The dead were Shankar Malakar, 38, of Sylhet city, and the auto-rickshaw driver, Babul Miah, 35, of Goainghat upazila. The injured passengers were rushed to hospital.

In Dirai upazila of Sunamganj, Chan Miah, 50, of Santoshpur village, died as a truck ran him over beside the Dirai Bridge.

Both the trucks were seized by police.

Our Dinajpur correspondent reports, Sushil Chandra Roy, 50, of village Dhakula in Parbatpur upazila, died as a power tiller hit him from behind at Habra on Parbatipur-Phulbari road yesterday.
