Convicted Yaba trader denied bail

Businessman Amin Huda, who was sentenced to 79 years' imprisonment in connection with one of the biggest Yaba haul, failed to get bail from the High Court yesterday.

The bench of Justice Md Ashfaqul Islam and Justice Kazi Md Ejarul Haque Akondo dropped two bail petitions of Amin Huda from its cause list after Attorney General Mahbubey Alam opposed his bail prayers in the cases.

The attorney general told The Daily Star that Amin Huda cannot get released from jail following the HC order.

Amin Huda's lawyer Abdul Baset Majumder told this correspondent that he will move two appeals for his client's bail before the HC after the ongoing vacation. The HC will reopen on May 7. On October 25, 2007, Rab seized 1.3 lakh Yaba tablets and 5,000 Yaba alternative drugs from the possession of Amin and his partner Ahsanul Haque Hasan in the capital's Gulshan. On May 5, 2013, following two government petitions, the Supreme Court cancelled an HC order, which granted Amin bail, and directed him to surrender before the trial court. On June 2, 2013 a Dhaka court sent him to jail after rejecting his bail petition following his surrender.
