Montu arrested, remanded over Ashulia unrest

Actor AR Montu was placed on a one-day remand by a Dhaka court yesterday in a case over instigating the recent labour unrest in Ashulia.

The Detective Branch (DB) of Police (Dhaka North) and Uttara police jointly arrested him in his Uttara residence in the capital yesterday in the case field by Ashulia police on last December 23. He was produced before the court with a seven-day remand prayer, said AFM Syed, officer-in-charge of DB.

With Montu, a total of 12 people, including BNP leader and Savar upazila Vice-Chairman Mini Akter Urmi, out of 15 named accused have been arrested in this case.

Meanwhile on December 24, Shadat Hossin , a sub-inspector  of the Ashulia Police Station, showed Savar correspondent of the daily Bangladesh Protidin Nazmul Huda arrested in a case filed for inaccurate reporting on the labour unrest. Nazmul, who is now in Dhaka jail, was picked up by police on December 23.

Thousands of workers at Ashulia started demonstration on December 12 demanding that their minimum salary be increased to Tk 15,000 from Tk 5,300 a month. Over 1,600 workers of different factories were terminated during the unrest.
