The Supreme Court yesterday upheld the cancellation of Krishak Shramik Janata League President Abdul Kader Siddique's candidacy for Tangail-4 constituency by-election.
An eight-member bench of the Appellate Division headed by Chief Justice SK Sinha dismissed an appeal filed by Kader Siddique challenging a High Court verdict that had upheld Election Commission's decision to cancel the candidacy for loan default.
Now there is no legal bar for the EC to start the process for holding the by-polls, EC's lawyer Barrister Mohammed Yehsin Khan told The Daily Star.
The EC will fix a schedule for holding the election after receiving the SC verdict, he added.
As the returning officer on October 13, 2015 cancelled Kader Siddique's nomination, he filed separate appeals, first with the EC and then with the HC.
