The Sunday Times leads the way with four nominations for this year’s London Press Club awards.
It’s on the shortlist for Sunday newspaper of the year, business journalist of the year (David Smith) and is nominated twice in the scoop-of-the-year category for its investigation into Fifa (insight team) and for its Trojan Horse exposé (Sian Griffiths and Richard Kerbaj).
The other contenders for Sunday newspaper of the year are the Mail on Sunday and the Independent on Sunday. The three shortlisted for daily paper of the year are the Daily Mail, Daily Mirror and the Times.
Perhaps unsurprisingly, the Financial Times dominates the business journalist category with three staffers on the shortlist - Ed Crooks, Michael Kavanagh and Gillian Tett - up against Smith of the Sunday Times.
Vying for broadcaster of the year are Matt Frei of Channel 4 News; the BBC’s social affairs correspondent Alison Holt; Radio 4’s Today programme host Mishal Husain; and BBC global health reporter Tulip Mazumdar.
Nominees for blog of the year are Iain Dale, Sarah Ditum and David Hepworth. Competing for the arts reviewer award are the Mail on Sunday’s Craig Brown, Giles Coren of the Times and the Sun’s Ally Ross.
Two special awards will also be made: the Edgar Wallace trophy for writing or reporting of the highest quality, and for Londoner of the year.
Bill Hagerty, chairman of the judges, spoke of the high standard among nominees, adding: “Dedicated professionals continue to produce fine, innovative journalism that overall remains the best in the world”.
Places for the awards lunch, which will take place at Stationers’ Hall on 14 April, can be booked by emailing info@londonpressclub.co.uk. Tickets are £155 for Press Club members, £165 for non-members and £1,600 for a table of 10.
