I’m often critical of Newsquest/Gannett - witness the recent post about its misconceived charging of journalism students to publish their work* - but the company is not all bad.
Through the Gannett Foundation, it has just given a grant of £9,140 to a hospice in the city of Brighton & Hove, The Martlets, in order to improve its equipment.
As a Brighton resident, I’m aware of the good work carried out at the hospice, which, although not part of the NHS, provides its services to terminally ill patients for free.
This year alone it requires £4.8m to keep running and more than two-thirds of that has to be generated from charitable sources.
So every little helps. A spokesman quoted by the Brighton Argus called the Gannett donation a “fantastic contribution”.
